[About Samsung Chromebook Plus's performance and external ports]

In general, Chromebook performance depends on the Octane Score-Javascript benchmark measurement

My Chromebook Plus's Octane Score was 9480.

For reference, the Score for my Asus Chromebook Flip 10.2 was 4805.

However, this is only a small reference, but it does not seem to measure the performance of the entire Chromebook.

For example, if you call it minus one degree in winter weather forecast, sometimes the actual temperature you feel can be at minus 5 degrees. The Chromebook also seems to have the speed that it actually feels. In other words, depending on the usage pattern of the user and the main tasks, the speed of perception may be slow or may be fast.

As I can see from the fact that this device has one of ARM CPU series, it is obvious that such a device that responds with a click is indispensable.

However, for most common business tasks (G Suite cloud-based), it seems to be very graceful and seem to be responding moderately (not the fastest response, but the normal response, not the burdensome rack).

In addition, Android apps have outperformed their normal behavior beyond what we expected. (Probably one of the benefits of ARM chips). Of course, in my personal work patterns, I rarely use Android apps on this Chromebook.

As you can guess, Chrome OS installed on this Samsung Chromebook Plus seems to have made a lot of optimizations in cooperation with Google. In particular, it looks more like supporting stylus pens that are not yet supported on other Chromebooks, and Google Keep memos being the default app for Samsung stylus pens.

For reference, I am using Google Docs, spreadsheet for G Suite, Google presentation for presentation slides, and occasional survey form for all document work. Of course, I am working on sending and receiving mail to Gmail.

Screenshots and annotations on Chrome are using the Awesome Screenshot as an extension for Google Chrome, and screen-recording and video creation can be done using 'Screencastify' to upload screen-recorded results to YouTube and to create animated GIF images .

The external connection ports of Samsung Chromebook Plus are all two USB Type C ports.

USB memory, HDMI or RGB VGA connection for dual monitor connection, ethernet connection etc. requires gender or a separate adapter.

At the time Apple released the new MacBook, it offered only a USB Type C port, which caused many complaints from users (Apple sells a separate gender or adapter at an extra cost) How glad is it to have one port on each side?

I have a gender (Micro USB 5-pin charger-to-USBC conversion gender) that was already using the Google Nexus 6P smartphone (this smartphone already offers fast charging to the USBC port). However, I purchased an adapter (HDMI port 1, USB 3.0 port 1, USBC charging port 1) for an HDMI dual monitor connection.

If you connect this monitor to the left USBC port of your Samsung Chromebook after purchasing this multiport for external monitor connection, the monitor screen periodically jiggles (as if the power is weak and the screen shakes) I can not confirm the problem with the purchased MULTI port adapter, but when I connect it to the right USBC terminal on the Chromebook (above picture), it works well without any problem. Therefore, the adapter is connected to the right side for monitor connection and the left side for other USB hub connection (see photo above).

The benefit of the USBC port is fast charging, high transfer speed (double speed of USB 3.0), and no connection at all. Most of the devices coming out in the coming years (Apple MacBook, Chromebook, Google smartphone pixel) are expected to be USBC.

Here are some of the complaints of Samsung Chromebook Plus devices .

First, the keyboard is smaller than the standard keyboard size. In particular, backspace key and tab key are smaller than standard keyboards. It is more inconvenient than I thought because I often write a lot of documents and often press backspace. It can be used to become accustomed.

Second, the touch of the keyboard is not so good. You have to get some strength when you press it. And every time I press a keyboard, I feel like I press a little low-cost keyboard.

Third, the touch sensitivity of the touch pad is not good. It is not particularly inconvenient to use, but it needs to be improved.

Fourth, the problem seems to be due to the MS rather than the problem of Samsung Chromebook. In the first half of 2016, Google announced its first Google Play Store support for Chrome OS, and announced that all Android apps will be able to run on Chrome OS. At the time, it was able to install Android apps on three Chromebooks (Google Chromebook Pixel (2015), Asus Chromebook Flip 10.2, and Acer R13 Convertible). At that time, after purchasing the Asus Chromebook Flip 10.2, I installed the free MS Office apps for Android and used them well, and from the moment it could not install these office apps on Chromebooks. At present, it can be installed on only smartphone for Android, but it can not be installed on Samsung Chromebook which supports Android app.

[A Case study of Samsung Chromebook Plus's Display]

There was some conflict between the Asus C302CA and Samsung Chromebook Plus models for this Chromebook purchase. In the end, however, Chromebook Plus made the final decision.

The purchase motive of Samsung Chromebook Plus is simple. If most of the Chromebooks I used (Acer C720p, Asus Flip 10.2) were serving as a second computer that consumes content at home (such as searching the web, watching videos, or occasionally watching netflix movies, etc.) It is a tool for creating content that is not intended for 2nd computer consuming but also for testing the possibility of being used as a main computer for business use.

IMG_20170318_084139.jpg

Earlier, I had already tasted the touchscreen with the Asus Chromebook Flip 10.2 model, 360 degrees of screen rotation, installing the Google Play Store Android app on Chrome OS, and so on.

This Samsung Chromebook has a 3: 2 aspect ratio, which is the same rate as the earlier Pixel Chromebooks from Google.

Given that Google's proprietary Chromebook pixels were in a 3: 2 ratio, the Samsung Chromebook Plus will be a fountain of a second Chromebook with a 3: 2 ratio.

While most other Chromebooks are in the 16: 9 ratio, there is a reason why Samsung has released a 3: 2 ratio.

My personal opinion is that it is designed to be suitable for content creation (mainly companies with a lot of paperwork) so that companies can use it as a main computer, rather than a device for content consumption for 2nd computer.

The screenshot below compares the same Google document with the 16: 9 ratio of Chromebooks and 3: 2 ratio of Samsung Chromebooks.

As you can see in the screenshot above, you can see that the 3: 2 ratio screen shows a range of documents larger than 16: 9.

Samsung Chromebook Plus resolution vs. Google Chromebook Pixel (2015) resolution 12.3 "LED Display (2400 x 1600) 3: 2 aspect ratio

Chromebook Pixel (2015): 12.85-inch touchscreen, 2560 x 1700 resolution, 3: 2 aspect ratio

The clarity of the screen is the clearest of the Chromebooks we've used so far.

[TIP: How to query in Natural Language (NLP) within Google Spreadsheets]

Introduced in the Google Cloud Next 2017, this feature allows you to Question/Answer in natural language within Google Spreadsheet.

In general, spreadsheet novices often do not know how to use a sheet or the functions Spreadsheet provide, so even if there is useful data in the sheet, it is often misaligned because of poor analysis.

If you take advantage of the Explore function in 'Spreadsheet' as shown below, you can create a good report.

This is a sample statement that can be queried in the Explore of a sheet.

1. What were the top item on 2017
2. How many unique countries
3. What percentage of Represent is '이영희'
5. Who is the top represent?
6. Top Sold Units for Rep of '홍길동'
7. How many sold items by '홍길동

[What is Team Drive?] for G Suite Business and G Suite for Education (White Paper)

Finaly. Google announced Team Drives officially for G Suite Business and G Suite for Education at Next 2017. Here is the more detail information on what the Team Drive is and how to use.

Team Drive  White Paper
What is Team Drive?
G Suite Business/G Suite for Education

Background

G Suite Business (Unlimited) and G Suite for Education is a new addition to Google Drive. It's a new addition to complement the functionality you need to team-collaborate on your existing Google Drive.

Note: This white paper was completed in December 2016. I have been selected as a beta tester by Google's Early Adopter Program and are based on tests that are only allowed on a domain. It is currently in beta. Google's full release is scheduled for early 2017. The information below is subject to change in the official release version

Constraints on Google Drive
  • If the owner of the document or files in the shared folder retires and the administrator deletes the account, all files and documents created by the retiree will be deleted.
  • If you've shared Drive folders with Google Groups, you can add new members to Groups. You will need to reshare these new members with the Drive folders or documents that were previously shared with the group.
    • The marketing department manager creates a Marketing folder within Google Drive and shares the folder with the Google groups - marketing@mycompany.com. If you currently have 5 members in the markting@mycompany.com group, the Marketing folder will be shared to 5 people. In the future, new employee, Charly, joins the marketing department. It is added as a member to the marketing@mycompany.com. all the materials previously shared with marketing@mycompany.com should be shared to Charly. However, the Marketing folder in Google Drive is not automatically shown on Charly’s Google Drive.  The marketing department manager can resubmit the owner of the Marketing folder to Charly.
    • There are restrictions on centralized control or team specific drive management functions.
    • In Google Drive, all files are managed by the owner created by the individual account. This means that you can not have full ownership of shared folders and all files stored in folders.
    • Each individual owns ownership of documents or files created with individual accounts. Files with different ownership can coexist within a shared folder. This makes it difficult to manage the files of each owner.
      • If file owners intentionally delete files or move them to another folder, the files will not be visible in other people's folders they share.
    • It is difficult to build a form like a centralized controllable file server for a company-wide or team-specific, department-specific.
    • After you create a Team Shared Folder, you can not give team members rights to create folders in subfolders and prevent them from being deleted or moved.
    • The administrator does not have a way to modify the share permissions of the folders users create. (Sharing permissions can only be changed by the folder owner)

What is Team Drive?

Team Drive is a shared space that allows you to collaborate with your team. This is a new service to complement the functionality you need for team collaboration in your existing Google Drive.

Team drives, like existing Google Drive, can use team drives for all users with G Suite Business (Unlimited) and G Suite for Education accounts.

Administrators can block users from creating new team drives by January 1, 2018, and from then on, all users will be able to create team drives.

With Team Drive, you can freely create and share folders and subfolders just like Google Drive does. However, there is a new rule for sharing as below.

VDI and Remote Desktop Solutions for Chromebook

Companies are increasingly introducing or reviewing thin clients, Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI), and Desktop as a Service (Daas) solutions to enhance security and maintain Windows-based legacy applications.
Computers reviewed as thin clients or zero clients are Windows-based thin clients and dedicated OS-based zero clients. These devices are more secure, but less usable (eg, laptop that can be carried around outside the company), and the cost of managing these devices is as high as a regular PC.
The dilemma of thin client adoption is that it is highly secure but not as cheap as you might think. One of the disadvantages is that the thin client of Windows OS or the zero client based on proprietary OS are not utilized very much. (In some cases, a corporate VPN connection may not be possible with a dedicated OS-based zero client solution.) In addition, some companies are demanding that they can work in an offline environment that does not have an Internet connection.
Chromebooks are emerging as new computers that solve this dilemma. Google is announcing a partnership with Citrix and VMware to connect VDI technologies to Chromebook. In addition, each solution-specific remote access app for Chromebook is already available in the Chrome Web Store.

Citrix Solution

Citrix Receiver is client software provided by Citrix. Supports remote access of Windows applications through XenDesktop and XenApp installed on Windows server or desktop. Allows access to applications, desktops, and data from any device, including Chromebook, smartphones, tablets, PCs, and Macs.

Google's Chrome Remote Desktop Program

Google's free app for Chrome. You can install it for free from the Chrome Web Store.
It is a module that enables mutual remote connection between computers with Chrome browser installed (Windows, Mac, Linux, Smartphone).

Chromebook users can access the Windows desktop to work remotely.

It has two functions.

1). Remote Assistance
  • It is mainly for use when you need to connect to a remote computer to support it.
  • On the other computer, click on "Share" after running Chrome Remote Desktop and pass the access code value to connect using this code value.

2). My Computer
  • You can access remotely My Computer as My Account and connect remotely when needed.
  • When registering my computer, I need to register my PIN number and enter this PIN number when connecting from a remote location.

[Chromebook Security] How to protect your Chromebook safetly

Chromebook Security

Chromebook provides multiple layers of protection using the principle of "defense in depth." Even if one of the layers of protection is disabled, the other layers remain in effect, so take precautions to protect your data, you can use the Internet a little more peace of mind.
The following security features are built into your Chromebook:
Auto update
The most effective protection against malware is to keep all software up-to-date and to apply the latest security fixes. Existing operating systems provide different software components from different vendors, and update mechanisms and user interfaces are different, which can be difficult to manage. Chromebook automatically manages updates, so they always run the latest and most secure version.
Sandbox
On a Chromebook, all web pages and applications run in a restricted environment called a "sandbox." So when you visit an infected webpage on your Chromebook, it will not affect anything else on your computer, including other tabs or apps. The threat is being blocked.
Self-Test Booting
Your Chromebook will continue to be protected even if malware penetrates the sandbox environment. Every time you start your Chromebook, it will perform a self-check called "self-test boot." If it detects that a system has been misconfigured or damaged in any way, it usually self-heals itself without any extra effort and reverts the Chromebook to a new operating system.
Data Encryption
When you use the web app on your Chromebook, all your important data is stored securely in the cloud. Files such as download, cookies, and browser cache files may remain on some computers. Accessing these files is very difficult on Chromebooks that encrypt data using tamper-resistant hardware.
Recovery mode
If you experience a problem with your Chromebook, you can simply press a button or use keyboard shortcuts to enter recovery mode and restore your operating system to a safe version without errors.

Check out the video below to learn more about the simple and essential steps you can take to improve your security while on the go.
Sometimes a link or email leads to a fake site that locks the browser. These sites are called "robbery sites" or "rogue sites," and make you think that users should pay to continue using their computers. This is not true. After a few simple steps, you can unlock your Chrome browser and use your Chromebook again as usual.
Unlock Chrome browser
  1. Select your Chromebook from this list and follow the instructions to reset your Chromebook. If your Chromebook is not listed, press Refresh + Power on your keyboard.
  2. When you sign in to your Chromebook and open the Chrome browser, the Restore window opens.
  3. Click the X in the top right corner to close the window.
  4. Note: Do not click Restore. Clicking Restore will reopen the malicious webpage and lock your browser.
  5. Open a few websites and make sure your browser is working properly.

Two-step verification for enhanced security

Gmail and G Suite provide a one-step verification to sign in with the user's email address and password most often used to sign in, and two-step verification to enter the verification code (SMS message / Google OTP / Security key).

2-step verification is the safest way to increase security when using a Google account. Even if user accounts and passwords are leaked, it is the safest method because once again you need to authenticate (send text / Google OTP / Security key) at login.

Why do I need 2-step verification?
  • If you use a public PC in a public place, such as an Internet cafe, and log in to Gmail, your account may be automatically saved on the exposed or borrowed PC and leaked to others. 2-step verification prevents this.
  • When presenting from outside, it prevents the leakage of account information if you log in using a PC other than your own PC.
  • Sometimes Gmail accounts are leaked, preventing you from paying for game items in the Google Play Store without your knowledge.
  • Prevent unauthorized use of your Gmail account information through your smartphone
In addition to this, you need to prevent your account information from being leaked for various reasons. To protect you from such information leakage, we offer 2-step verification.

There are four different 2-step verification methods we offer.
  1. Send verification codes to voice or SMS messages
  2. Use a one-time password with the Google Authenticator app
  3. Backup code - use 10 disposable codes
  4. Use the USB security key

How to set up 2-step verification

  1. Log in to Gmail and click 'My Account'

  1. My Account> Sign-In & Security
sign-in & security.png

  1. Sign-In & Security > 2 Step Verification
2 step verification.png

  1. 2 Step Verification > Security Key, Voice or Text Message

An example of using 'security key' for 2-step verification.

I'm using a security key for 2-step verification. This is a security key product certified by Google. Yubico's FIDO U2F key is purchased and used. When I login to Gmail, I need to authenticate to this security key in 2-step, and I login after I press the key with the blue light on the USB port. Once authenticated, my Chromebook does not require a security key for 30 days. When I work on someone else's computer, or open a new incognito window and ask for my security key when I sign in to Gmail.
